Letter from Our Founder and Executive Director
Dear friends of the Latino Community Center:
There is a value that has always been associated with our community, and that is Familia. I can’t think of a better value that grounded us and was core to getting through the many challenges and barriers of this past year. From launching the Latino Family Center, whose sole purpose is to help parents and caregivers raise healthy and happy children, to helping our community members understand and access the vaccine to protect themselves and their loved ones, it all centered around Family. No matter how difficult the year got, we knew, as a team, that at the core we were here to support our families.
This year has been one of rapid growth. As you will read throughout our report, we started over 9 different programs, some planned and some unplanned, yet needed. We maintained stability in our educational programs because we knew that what our kids needed most in this scary and unpredictable time was exactly that: stability. We remained flexible and adaptable to what our community needed, and we tried our best to be there. However, we did not anticipate the demand for our services would far exceed our projections. While we are humbled to know that families trust us and reach out to us in times of need, it has also been hard to know that over 100 families at any given time are on our waitlist due to capacity.
While we have not been immune to the burnout and exhaustion that many nonprofits are experiencing during this time, I am beyond proud of the team, parent leaders, volunteers, and partners who have stepped up and supported one another throughout this time. This includes our team members that are no longer with us, the ones that left due to burnout, due to the mental exhaustion of working in a social service organization during this time. I know that they gave it their all until their very last day with us.
It has been a difficult time to be a leader of an organization during this time; however, it has also been a time in which I got to see the best in people. From donors and funders reaching out proactively, to families supporting each other and partner organizations coming together like never before to bridge the gaps. This is what has gotten us through and I feel fortunate enough to have lived it.
The Latino Community Center is resilient, and while we may have some scratches, some wounds, and definitely trauma, our team and our community are still here, and are still standing strong. I thank you for taking the time to read about us and the impact we have made together on our region.

Our Vision Continues
Since its founding, LCC has grown year after year. In 2022, we will celebrate our fifth anniversary, reaffirming our commitment to Latino families in Allegheny County.
Among our next steps:
Avanzando through College, a new program in partnership with UnidosUS designed to empower first-generation college freshmen and sophomores to succeed.
SOY STEM at Arsenal Middle School, developed with Sarah Heinz House and supported by the PPG Foundation.
